RES just ate a crayfish!!!!!

owen13 Apr 12, 2004 05:57 PM

My RES just ate a crayfish about the size of its head. I hope there wouln't be any ill effects. The other crayfish in its tank first tried to save his buddy by pulling him away then beached himself for an hour. The RES picked apart the crayfish limb by limb the finally ate the body.

res eat crayfish in the wild. you cant keep them together unless you want the turtle to eat the crayfish

I feed crayfish to my RES as a monthly treat when they are available here in Miami. Stocks are running low at the farms, so they don't ship as many. I feed him 2 or 3 at a time, and two watch as their buddy is shredded. I also feed my 4" snapper the same size craws and she usually bites the claws and legs off, and then swallows it still kicking... I used to worry bout her doin that, but she hasnt been hurt yet

just a word of caution...crayfish sometimes carry bacteria that can make your turtle ill...i stopped feeding my turtle crayfish just because i thought any problem i could avoid i would.

Shouldn't be any problem. Your other crayfish was not attempting to rescue it's buddy though. I can assure he was just looking for a piece of the the turtle's meal. Crayfish are scavengers and definitely not beyond canabilism. He was just trying to steal a meal from your turtle.
