Dragon_Tamer Apr 12, 2004 08:16 PM

Hey, i just cought a ribbon snake and tried to feed it some feeder fish like i normaly do with my other ribboon. But he wont eat. is it because hes wild caught or just has a different diet in the wild? if anyone could give me an answer that would be great. i really dont wanna let him go hes got such a great temper and looks like he got a little beat up in the wild.

It could be any number of reasons, but a good one to start with is stres? Is it by itself? Does it have hides, correct temps, etc? How long has it been in captivity?

I would warm it up a little. 2 days is also not very long. Could just be stressed out.

I don't know that I'd keep him. He is a wild snake and sometimes, they'd rather die than be kept in captivity. You can go get a garter that will eat fish a at just about any nearby pet store that will probably live longer. Most snakes in the wild do look a bit beat up, but they're ok. If it doesn't eat in 3 days, I'd certainly put him back. Something you might try that my snake loves is pet grass from Petco or some place like that. Make sure it isn't catnip. Just the regular pet grass they sell. Garters love to curl up in that stuff and rest or just hide. That's where mine is, now *rolls eyes* But it's a nice hiding spot for them. Just give it a bit of water every other day (without the snake in it, of course) and it will live a few weeks. Just make sure, when you take it out, that the snake is not still wrapped up in it. Happened more than once, here. Also, you might try keeping the temp in the snakes cage at around 87 and drop it down to 75ish at night. Makes them more active and my snake eats like a horse. Good luck with the snake.
