Leo Incubator Idea...

krystal19_85 Jun 13, 2003 08:31 PM

Could I use an aquarium for an incubator if I heat it (heat pand and/or lights, what would be best?) and fill the bottom with perlite or vermaculite? Also Would potting soil be suitable to substitute perlite/vermaculite? I was thinking of making a top for it out of (plexi?)glass and wood so I can see and keep up humidity. Can you recommend a good thermometer/hydrometer combo, I know the zoo-med is crap, maybe some digital ones. I also need to know what is the BEST thermostat? I need this for incubators and racks, so I want the best, maybe even with night drop.

OK instead of filling the whole cage with vermiculture just fill the tank with like 3in of water then take 2 bricks and set a rubbermaid container with a couple of small holes drilled in it. Then just fill the container with verm, and thats where you will place your eggs. Then take a submersible aquarium heater and set it to the temp you want you eggs incubated at. The plexi-glass top will work good. Also you can just but a cheap digital thermometer that measures temp and humidity at like Best Buy or Radio Shack.
