At what age do the spurs develop ?

Sunshine Apr 12, 2004 08:34 PM

I am amazed at how my young ones differ in color from shed to shed, especially the youngest ones. At fist the 2 babies were almost identical in color. Now one is darker than the other. I didn't have the opportunity to see this my first pair. They were both adults when purchased and the only change of color they really have is the lightening of their sides after dark. Their 10 month old baby isn't as dramatic, but the one I gave to a friend is quite a bit larger and more reddish-brown than mine who is orangish-brown. It's exciting to see how much variation there is with only 2. But, my question is....when will their spurs be easily seen? None of the young ones have any visible. Do they rock along kind of unnoticeable until they reach sexual maturity?

i can't see spurs on my youngest male...and he's 10 months. however, i've seen them prominently on yearling males...so i'm lead by that experience to say sometime in the later part of their first year...but that's a guess based on limited experience. i know they start producing sperm at about one year old, so maybe that has something to do with it....i'd like to hear what jeff has to say.

. I have looked at all of my young BRBs over the last few days. The near yearling males have visible small spurs. I cannot yet see spurs on their female siblings. The nearly two-year-olds of both sexes have very visible spurs. The spurs on the males are larger than the female's spurs. At around the time my male BRBs reach maturity their spurs change from blunt straight dull brownish colored little spurs into much larger curved sharp light colored spurs.
