About an HOUR OLD hatchling & his brother still in the egg!

cbgeckos Apr 12, 2004 10:08 PM

Hey all:

Thought you might get a kick out of this little guy huddled in the "corner" of his incubating dish. The other egg hatched w/in 24 hours.

Just for anyone wondering about the incubating medium, I use a mixed substrate of fine grade vermiculite and regular size perlite...about 50/50 by volume.

More photos to come as I recently bought a new digital camera and I'm going crazy with it!

Nice gecko, looks great. Congrats!
I had a question, I also am in the market for a digital camera, for normal use, nothing fancy, but I will of course use it for pix of my leo. What kind of camera did you get if you don't mind me askin? And how is it?

It's an HP Photosmart 735. You can get them brand new for $199 or look on eBay. I got mine on eBay for $125.

As far as the camera is concerned, it's perfect for every day use and for taking super close-ups of your geckos (which was my primary reason for buying it). It even has a video mode which is pretty neat. There are downsides to it (bulky, goes through 2 regular batteries in an hour of taking photos), but the pros outweigh the cons in my opinion.

I have attached a closeup photo of the same original gecko, but showing you how close you can get with this camera. You can get even closer but I wanted to keep the egg in the photo showing that it had just hatched out. Not bad for $125 if I do say so myself.

I did quite a bit of research on digital cameras before I bought one so if you have any more questions, feel free to e-mail me directly.

To solve your battery issue with the camera, get the 15 minute charge Rayovac batteries. You can get the charger and 4 AA batteries for about $30. The cheapest place I've found them is at Walmart. These batteries last longer then any other battery i've used, and they really do only take 15 minutes to go from 0% to 100%

That's interesting that you mention Rayovac because in my experience, Rayovac batteries are the WORST batteries on the market. Those were the ones I was using when they lasted only 1 hour. Duracell lasted a little bit longer but not by much. Then I found out I was using batteries that were rated 1500-1850 mAH (mAH?).

Anyway, as far the rechargeable batteries go, that is definitely a must. I actually went to Walmart and bought four 2200 mAH batteries and a 1 hour charger for $19 total. It says they are made specifically for high energy electronics like digital cameras. I'm on the 3rd day of using the camera with these batteries, and I'm still at full battery power....even after taking about 50 pictures and 5 minutes of video.

Very nice leo, congrats I am planning on getting the new Canon A75 digital camera. Do you have an opinion on Canon cameras? For the most part i just want to take closeups of my geckos and setups without having to light up the room lol. The cheap camera i have now is cool, i like it but usually by the time i get the lighting up enough so it will actually take the picture, the colours are all washed out.

I was just thinking that pictures are so deceiving. I knew that leo eggs would be small but i didnt' realize how small until my girl laid them. I think i'll take some comparison pics of the eggs i have now.
