I need help in the IDing of this turtle

spikedsparkles Apr 12, 2004 10:18 PM

I live in louisiana, and i caught this turtle a few days ago. "it was on the road".. I haven't seen this type before, and it had a shell shape like a snapper, and a head like a slidder but without the red.. it had yellowish stripes on its head and legs.

It is a map turtle of some type. Graptemys sp. It is hard for me to distinguish between two possible species Graptemys kohni (Mississippi Map Turtle) and Graptemys pseudogeographica (False Map Turtle). I've heard where they overlap they hybridize (breed between species). Here in KY we have False Maps. I've seen baby MS maps and they look similar to the turtle you have.

ITS A MAP TURTLE. YAAY!

That is a Mississippi map turtle (Graptemys pseudogeographica kohni). The threatened (not endangered) map turtle found in Louisiana is the yellow-blotched map (Graptemys flavimaculata) from the Pearl River.

G. flavimaculata occurs in the pascagoula drainage, not the pearl. You mean G. occulifera the ringed map turtle, that is the turtle in the pearl river system.
