Hydroponically grown plants in herp enclosures, yay or nay?

jrbl Apr 12, 2004 10:45 PM

Hi,
I love having plants in my herp enclosures, but I have been hearing, "dirt is bad, don't put dirt with your herps". I have alwas had dirt with my potted plants and I have not noticed any health problems. I have been thinking of using a soil alternitive. THere are some expanded clay aggregate stuff that is used in hydroponics that I think would work for this. THere is also some stuff called "CocoTek" that is basically just coconut bark or whatever. I am not really too worried about the soil alternative, but what I am worried about is the nutrient solution. Hydroponically grown plants generally need a nutrient solution to replace everything they would get from soil. It is just they are chemicals and if my animals come in contact with it, I am not sure what would happen. Does anyone know of a non-toxic nutrient solution? Does anyone grow their plants hydroponically in their herp enclosures? What are your votes? Is it yay or nay on hydroponically grown plants with herps? Sorry if the post is too long. THank you for the help, Josh

if it is a herp commonly kept on bed a beast (ground co-co fiber) then you can pot your plants in that.
