questions on savannah monitors.

chong188 Jun 13, 2003 08:46 PM

Hi im interested in getting a savannah monitor. Im wondering how big of a cage would be needed for keeping a single savvy?
i want to start out with a cage that will be the size it needs when its an adult, i dont want to go from a smaller cage when its young then to a bigger one when its an adult.

how big of cages do you people house a single savvy in?

What do you recommend for a cage size for me to use?

Thanks Jesse Olson.

Hey, a hatchling cage IS recommended.
You will have better control of temps, and can see how much he is eating. It is also easier to completely change the dirt in a small cage, as he will be growing fast, and crapping a lot..

Make the smaller cage well, and a general box design. You can always use it after he outgrows it for another herp (snake?). It is not a waste of time to build it.

A MINIMUM adult cage would be twice the adult lenth and half as wide. Since savs grow to be around 3-4 feet, 6-8 feet long and 3-4 feet wide is a MINIMUM. Plywood comes in 8 x 4 sheets, why not make it easy on yourself, and go 8 x 4? Larger is always recommended. The only life they have, will be in that box.
Cheers. D.

Hi there, well, if you want to want to house a single Sav, and not have to change cages, I suggest you build a 6' by 6' Cage for the adult, or just build that, then do exstensive research, then purchase the Sav. But...only buy one if you know what youa re getting into! Please please please do not buy on impulse, if you know how big of a commitment this is, go for it. I suggest www.[bleep] you can get some captive bred babies for a good deal. Best of luck to you mate!
