Enclosure for young boas?

bpmaster123 Apr 12, 2004 11:12 PM

For a young baby or yearling bci would a large plastic tupperware or whatever brand container work? I figured this would be nice because boas grow pretty fast and i don't have any 20gallon tanks laying around. If you did use this how would you go about ventilating the enclosure? holes in the top?
Any help would be appreciated!

You could probably find a Rubbermaid or Sterilite container that would work OK as long as the heating and temp issues are addressed. You could drill some small holes around the top portion. I have some of the Boaphile racks with the Rubbermaid shoe and sweater boxes, and I drilled holes all around the top of them. You just have to do it carefully, or sometimes the plastic will crack a little. Good Luck!

Probably not the "best" option, but it would probably work just fine. You will definately need some ventilation holes either in the lid or in the sides of the container.

Also, how are you planning on heating the enclosure? I would hate for you to start melting plastic... but I doubt that will be a problem.

Also, sometimes the insides of those plastic containers can have sharp burrs left over from the molding process. Make sure to take a file or some sand paper to any rough or sharp edges before you put your boa in.

For what its worth, I place my Boa in a small tupperware conatiner when its feeding time.

I use Sterlite boxes and I put holes around the top using a hot glue gun. That way, there are no rough edges. For heating on a shelf, I use a string of rope lights. I use the blue so they are not bright at night. I lay the rope light against the wall on the shelf, and place the box long way up next to the rope. This way, the back edge of the box is nice and warm. Never had any problems with getting too hot. However, keep in mind I do this in a room where the ambient temps are in the 80's - 90's. I don't think the rope light would give off enough heat in an air conditioned situation.

Thanks everyone for all your help. I will use your tips. That will be perfect, i don't see the use in spending money for something that the boa will quickly grow out of.
