I believe this is your old post !

i live in the south west of western australia and we have these skink like lizards- they are about 40- 60cms long, shiny black colour, with a really long tail. im having problems because they keep eating our chook eggs ( up to ten a day) i woner if anyone knows how to deter these guys from comming in - our chooks are free range so its har to keep the lizards out. i tried to get a photo but they are really shy and are usually found under bits or tin and wood. help!

I really don't know how you would go about getting rid of these little skinks, especailly if you have other free roamers as you say (Chook)

I'd like to know , you say they come in, come in where? Because you also say they hide under old wood and tin.
Where is the old wood and tin, they are hiding under?

Anyway , mabe if you picked up the wood and tin, and tried to remove any hiding spots, you know them to use, this would be discouraging to them.

NOT to be able to take cover.
That can be stressful to a lizard , not having a hide. Maybe it will deter them. Especially a shy lizard.

I do not know how else to tell you to do it! That would not be harmful to them.

Sorry I wish I had a better answer for you.

Hope you can find a solution. But really try removing anything they can get under. They will not remain and stay in the open.

thanks for you help- its hard to get rid of the hiding places as we have alot of timbre for storage near our chook pen. i was more hoping for some sort of odor they might hy away from.

PHEve Apr 13, 2004 09:42 PM

have problems, great hiding place for lizards, they can come and go and remain hidden for the most part!

Guess you have to determine, if the eggs are more important than moving the timber to a spot away from the pens !

I really dont know of a scent, I will ask around and let you know if there is anything. How about a cat that likes birds but chases lizards, *SMILE*

hmm... i donno about a cat- we do have a dog but they gang up on him and now hes scared of them. they used to steal his dinner when we tied him up for the evening and you would hear him yelping coz he couldnt run away. these are pretty cool lizards and i wouldnt want to get rid of them. hmmm.... this is gonna be harder than i thought.

PHEve Apr 14, 2004 10:31 AM

I have a BTS, I love her, I was thinking when I first read your post how cool it was to have all those skinks in your yard, hehehheeh !

Anyway I can believe you about eating the dogs dinner, thats the kind of thing they like. Fruits, meats, dogfood catfood, eggs, usually hardboiled, (I dont have Chook eggs) all kinds of things.

They are GOOD eaters ! The wood pile is a wonderful hangout !

But I kinda think you may have new tenants, for quite a while. Sounds as though they have something good going, stealing from you !

haha- yeah it is pretty cool having them around the yard but sometimes when you walk outside you wont see one and when you get too close they will race off and scare the crap out of you. haha- but i cant get mad coz thir just sooo cute!! hey whats a BTS??

PHEve Apr 15, 2004 07:32 AM

Blue Tongue Skink, yeah, they have the most incredible blue tongues, when they flick them out, awesome.

Here is my big girl, Chiquita, shes about 21 inches so far.
Very friendly, and just a nice pet !

Shes called a Merauke Blue Tongue Skink, there are alot of species of skinks, different colors, sizes.

awww... shes cute. we have blue tounge lizards around here. there pretty funny coz there really slow and dont seem to mine if you go to look at them. we also have these racehorse goanas that are pretty funny- one hid from the tractor the other day by running up a power pole. you shouldnt stand near them and startle them coz they will run up you and sit on your head. quite amusing.

live in a cool place, farm type atmosphere! I'd love to be able to see all those different lizards, on my land, naturally that is, hehehehe.

I can go to my reptile room and see over 30 lizards and frogs, LOL but outside, never any herps, in my yard !

im totally new to all this reptile stuff- err... whats a herp???

PHEve Apr 17, 2004 08:06 AM

Herps, is just a term used for reptiles and frogs , just comes from the word
Herpetology - The study of Reptiles and amphibians

So when your on here and you hear, "I have several herps"

now you will know what they are talking about too ! :P

We tend to use short versions of things after awhile on here.

Like I did with the BTS, instead of writing out Blue Tongue Skink all the time, but we do forget, some people who don't have them may not know.

i laughed when you first said it - it sounds like some sexual desease. haha. i should probably look around and find some other reptile only words to learn. sometimes when i read other peoples messages i have absolutely no idea what they are talking about, but if i read on it kinda makes sense.... kinda.. haha

PHEve Apr 17, 2004 11:20 PM

just ask, IF we know them, hahhahaa, we will tell you !

Thats how ya learn. Don't ever feel dumb asking, we all ASK !

Hey think you will be getting any lizards as pets, or do you have enough skinks running in your yard, LOL

Oh you do know LOL mean laughing out loud , right? I laugh all the time,

haha- yeah i know LOL means laugh out loud- im not completely new to the internet- just the reptile section. i dont think i will get a pet lizard anytime soon- there is definatly enough of them in the back yard- there are these little ghekkos outside too so if i wanna go pick one up or something they dont run away- they will hop on your hand and dont get scared. hey is it true lizards keep snakes away? i donno where i heard that- i have a huge phobia of snakes and spiders. i would gladly give up the eggs if i know the lizards will keep the snakes away! haha

PHEve Apr 18, 2004 10:19 AM

have lizards for lunch, when they are available. And snakes probably would like to steal your eggs also. I think some snakes are gorgeous.

I won't own any though because I can not feed them furry critters. I have furry critters as PETS!!

I wonder what kind of geckos you have, sound neat if they just jump into your hand.

Maybe small house geckos. What do they look like?

PHEve Apr 20, 2004 02:17 PM

So snakes give ya the shivers hunh , Hehehhehe ! I like them alot, but like I told you, would not want to feed furry things to them.

So how is the skink problem, still eating the chook eggs?
