Incubator...

krystal19_85 Jun 13, 2003 08:56 PM

Could I use an aquarium for an incubator if I heat it (heat pand and/or lights, what would be best?) and fill the bottom with perlite or vermaculite? Also Would potting soil be suitable to substitute perlite/vermaculite? I was thinking of making a top for it out of (plexi?)glass and wood so I can see and keep up humidity. Can you recommend a good thermometer/hydrometer combo, I know the zoo-med is crap, maybe some digital ones. I also need to know what is the BEST thermostat? I need this for incubators and racks, so I want the best, maybe even with night drop.

I don't see why not. You could cover most of the top with saran wrap to keep the humidity in.

Hm, no edit function.

Oh, well--I wouldn't use potting soil for incubation. It can work, but an incubation medium should be as sterile as possible, to help prevent the growth of molds or bacteria. There's also more air flow with vermiculite.

Thanks and for the top, I said I would make a wood/glass top for it.
