One of my savs has developed a respitory infection and although he has a vets appointment this afternoon i am very apprehensive about the care he will recieve from them as the vet i would normally use seems to have disappeared of the face of the earth. as the vet he has an appointment with even asked me to bring a book along(didn't know whether to laugh or cry when this was suggested). The infection has come on very very suddenely from what i can tell as he has ben in perfect health up until yesterday night i sat up with him throughout the night and was able to observe him coughing i could hear the mucus on his chest from the other side of the room and he also had laboured breathing ,breathing once every two-five minutes,it sounded like he had to force the air through. He is about 8 and is in an 8x4x4 with a 140 degree basking spot and 84 cool end with a 50/50 cypress mulch dirt mix and he eats rats, mice, locusts, crickets, superworms, and fish. I have not changed anything in the tank recently. I hear that AMAKACIN is good has anyone got any experience with this?
P.Ssorry if this message is written badly i amvery tired.

HI there,

I have heard that amikacin is an improper drug to use with reptiles. Why, I haven't heard an explanation for, but I have heard that it may not be an appropriate drug for treating bacterial infections in herps on several occasions. In my experience with sick herps, and upon talking with several vets, enrofloxacin(baytril)appears to be the better candidate for treating bacterial infections in reptiles, including URI's. However not all "respiratory infections" are bacterial in origin, that is up to the vet to diagnose. It could be a wide variety of other types of pathogens which may cause it, where an antibacterial agent such as baytril would not alleviate.. Best of luck to you, finding a good reptile vet is quite the task; I am still searching for one to trust my animal's lives with...

I would be a bit concerned however, if my vet asked me to bring a book about savanah monitors, especially if he was referring to those crappy TFH "Savanah monitors for beginners" books...
Take care, and I hope he turns out O.K.
