Cut the cord or not?

arik Apr 13, 2004 07:53 AM

I need some advice on switching to a Kane heat mat for heat inside my enclosure. The only thing I'm stuck on is how to route the power cord to the outside. Should I drill the hole big enough for the plug to fit through intact? Or should I drill the hole closer to the size of the cord and cut the cord then splice the wires back together again on the outside of the cage. I see pros and cons for each. Any ideas? Or a way to avoid this problem outright?

i would not cut the cord...duct tape can hold strong on the wings of airplanes...it will be enough to cover the little hole so the anaconda cant mess with it.

I would cut the plug end off, drill a small hole, and then go to Home Depot or Lowes or any type of electrical supply place, and get a new plug to install on the end of the cord. They do make replacement plug end that can be used to replace a broken one. Just tell the person at the store what you need, and they should be able to help you. In fact if you bring a small piece of the cord with you, they can give you a plug to match your cord. There is no down side to this at all. If you know how to strip wire and tighten terminals, its a no brainer. There is no risk of electrical fire or anything unless you fit the plug wrong. I like small holes in my cages. Its a cosmetic thing, but appearance means a lot to me.
Good luck,
Chris
