I know you're busy with your taxes, but...how does Luna look to you?

lele Apr 13, 2004 01:05 PM

here is a photo I just took of Luna - a little blurry. I don't like the fact that her spine seems to be showing. She is holding at 96g (weighed her yesterday. She is not eating (repti-aid once or twice a day) but is active, drinking, sleeping, etc.

Have they done an x-ray yet.
Also I would feed every second or third day.
repta aid may have too much calcium and vitamins for daily use.
If you can put her in the sun or even open shade outside for several hours daily you may see her appetite increase tremendously. Can you set up a sunning cage.
I also have better results with feeding every second or third day. They have been feeding better and no hunger strikes.
Also I have been reading about how life can be extended by going on extremely low calorie diets. Animals that were fed more sparingly lived way longer. Since chams are relatively short lived that may help extend their lives quite a bit.
Ohana looked like that when gravid the bones on her back and tail started showing.

thanks, sonia. She's not eating that much repti-aid and I just got her back on it a couple days ago but I will keep it to a minimum.

As for outside...well, it's pouring and about 40 (or colder). I bring her out for a little bit of time when it hits 50 , no wind and sunny, but it is still quite cool here - hey, we can get snow in May!

I have her smaller original cage for outdoor use once it warms up enough. She has her MV bulb on for 8 hours plus her basking and the repti-sun. it's interesting to see how she chooses one over the other at different times of the day.

... in Perris, CA it's been about 80, with night time lows at about 59. Still just a BIT cold, but warm enough to send some of my beardies and chams outside 24/7.
No, I'm not rubbing it in. Okay, well... I'm just doing my happy dance for my reptiles is all!

I noticed you mentioned on one of my posts that you thought she might have absorbed the eggs. I don't know if veileds can do this (anyone know if they can?). Good idea on the x-ray, especially if she's been like this since Christmas.
I wonder though.... if it turns out that she's not gravid, why not breed her? I remember someone here on the forum (was that Anson?) gave you Luna, Luna has some special needs (stumpy tail?)or you had a reason (was that a condition of her giving you the cham?) for not wanting to breed Luna. My thoughts are foggy, so excuse me.
Yet another thought..... if she's maintaining her weight, but is showing some thinning around the spine and tail, could be that she's putting everything she has into egg production (hence the x-ray!). Have you considered giving her a pinky? I've even heard of some keepers offering finch hatchlings (for those that may have a bird breeder friend). Just food for thought (hehehe).

Hi Victor,

I don't mind the cool weather at all - it's invigorating. lived in FL for 4 years and hated it I'm a northeastern girl through and through!

Beside Luna's special needs (the tail is not an issue but her size might be, it was an agreement that Sonia and I made) I do not have the time, space or $$ to be messing around with babies and then trying to find them good homes so it's not an option anyway.

pinky? baby finch? Absolutely not - I can't even kill certain bugs! Also, I do not eat meat (for 20 years) so I cannot imagine feeding/handling/purchasing a mouse or birdas food - but thanks for the suggestion

I think they can reabsorb eggs but there is little to no info on it b/c everyone breeds. The x-rays will cost $95. Now don't anyone yell at me about the $/cham aspect. My vet had said it may not reveal anything (this was a couple months ago) and since she was fine in every other way not to worry. But now...well, I am waiting for him to call me back to discuss. Will keep you posted.

Her color looks good. I don't see her hip bones sticking out or anything like that. I think she looks fine. I don't like the spine thing either, my "Lola" doesn't seem to have that - but I've never read about that being a problem.

Lola went through a time where she wouldn't drink and eat last fall. I added a plant at the top of her cage, plus bought a palm to go outside her cage. She started eating and drinking again when I did that.

It's possible Luna may just need a little extra coverage - or other environmental change to get her eating again. I assume you've tried varying her choices. Also vary how your present her food. I've found leaving the food on a large leaf in the AM first thing is attractive.

Good Luck! I'm sure Luna will be just fine.
