this is how I am running light, little to no heat coming from this lamp. The heat pads can be mounted inside or under the cage, I have mine under the cage. As far as you wanting to cut the cord on it, As long as you get a good replacment plug you will be fine. DONT try to twist the wires together and wrap them with electrical tape.
