Cricket free babies?

dynamohum1 Apr 13, 2004 02:27 PM

I do not want to start a debate about good vs. bad on the cricket free thing. I have already made up my mind on that. I would like to know how you start the babies feeding on pellets/greens only, do they take to them easily? Are you tempted to give insects to slow or reluctant feeders and any tricks to get them to eat the pellets at a few days old?

Put a large paper plate in the cage and bounce the pellets off it, drop them in one at a time. BDs are attracted by movement. You can also try soaking them in different juices (no sugar added) then bounce them in. Offer the pellets first thing before other foods about an hour after lights on and then again throughout the day. don't starve him if he wont eat them but try for a few days with only offering pellets. You can also feed moisten pellets to the crix about 1 hour before you feed them to your BD. The scent of the pellets will get on them and he may learn to associate the smell.

I am interested in starting babies from hatching on pellets and veggies only, how difficult is this?

Mine went for it right away never had a problem except some were very particular about color of the pellets. Brand also makes a difference. Mine love the rep cal, the little balls that look like trix cereal.

My adult will ONLY eat the green pellets. I think we should petition Rep-Cal to package them in individual colors. I'm throwing away 2/3s of every package I buy! lol!

LOL send them here... I have a female that eats EVERY pellet she sees! She goes to visit a male in his tank and guess what? She dives into the food dish and eats all his pellets before she even pays him any attention LOL

Agree I could use 5lbs of reds. Actually I've got enough that only eat one color that I can play musical food dish to get rid of most, I'm still stuck with some yellow though. Does anyone know if they have a different flavor, or is it just a color thing (I've never been brave enough to pop a handful in to try). lol

Ocho usually LOVES red fruits, like raspberries, but he avoids the red pellets like the plague! He's a mystery!

How long would you let a hatchling go offering just pellets before you would give live prey, or will they all eventually take the pellets?

Did you get the email I sent via KS? I sent it earlier.

If you want a sheet on raising crix free, email me. I have it in a word doc and can't send it via the contact form here.
