Egg laying/breeding question?

MattP Apr 13, 2004 02:57 PM

I'm confused. I have three veileds, two females and a male. The two females are about 4 to 5 months old and the male is about 3-4 months old. The male I bought about a week ago and he is alot smaller than my females. I know they can become receptive at six months of age, but my male probably wont be ready to breed by then.

My questions are basically about breeding and laying eggs.

1. Will my females lay eggs even if they don't breed with my male? And if they do, when will they probably lay them?

2. Even though my male is about half the size of my females will he be ready to breed when they are ready to breed?

Basically I want to know If I will be able to breed my females, with my male, the first time around. Or will I probably have to wait until the second time? Also, how often do females become receptive and when?

Thank you so much,

Matt

Yes it is possible for your females to lay eggs even with out breeding them to your male. Females can reach sexual maturity at an early age of 6 months but generally not until they are 8-9 months old.

Chances are your male will be of age to breed when your females reach sexual maturity and I have bred a smaller male to a larger female but I wouldnt breed your chameleons until your females are at least a year old. Breeding them too young can result in your females never attaining full size due to the high amounts of calcium needed to produce the eggs it doesnt leave much for bone growth.

With my female veilds I have noticed them becoming receptive about 3 times a year. With mine I never bred them though more than twice a year to reduce the strain it puts on the female.
