While at lunch today... April 13th 2004

A little story,
I just got back from lunch...
I am now working back in my old stomping grounds since Dec. in Lake Forest Calif. Where I grew up finding Kings, Gophers and Racers, Ringnecks ect. It's a gorgous day mid 70's. Well I decided to go to one of the places I used to go to when I was a bike riding kid(70's).There are new buldings all around the spot but in the middle there seemed to be the same little creek still running.
I walked down a little trail and saw some hay bails, I assume they were put there for water run off or something.Good cool place for snakes I'm thinking... Thinking like a snake again ...
Well I lifted the second bail of hay I saw and there was a 3 1/2 foot Gopher under it ! Bluebelly and Side Blotched lizards were everywhere. Bullfrogs and Crayfish and little Bass even, still.
What a break from work!
The moral of the story to me is, Reptiles and andphibians are survivors !
It was a thrill to see that snakes are still there 25m or so years later! I'm getting old but still dig herping!
I didn't eat but it was worth it !
I'm sure you veteran herpers alike can relate.
Have a great day I am now...

Hey Tony-
Nice finds, only if every lunch break was that amusing! It is so true reptiles are survivors. There are no other species that amaze me nearly as much as reptiles. They are found here, there, well everywhere! I am looking foward to herping with you this weekend, hopefully we turn up more than a gopher snake though! Again, I hope you are able to encounter more species on lunch breaks and that goes for everyone, skip lunch one day and go herpin'. You never know what could turn up! Jon Rootsrok
