I was wondering if any one has an outdoor incloser that they keep there box turtle in I live in south carolina and I am getting a box turtle in the next week if every thing goes as planed! My dogs will not have access to were he will be but I have 2 cats that will look at him but then relise that they cant get to him and go look at some thing else. But I can build a pen like thing so he can have room to roam outside all day and then I will bring him in at night. Also can they live with out crickets I dont mind feeding him worms and grubs but I have a fear of crickets.(Don't laugh at me!)And at night can I get a really big rubermaid container for him to be in while he sleeps? You have all those pets and you're thinking about getting MORE?Depending on what kind of box turtle you're getting (ie. native to SC), you ought to be able to leave it outside day and night, year round, assuming that you construct an enclosure that is escape proof, dog proof, predator proof, has clean water available at all times, shade, sun, plenty of cover, a good place to hibernate, etc.
You're also going to need to provide a diet that is more balanced than what you've mentioned so far: box turtles also need vegetables, fruit and greens in their diet.

a outdoor pen is a must for all box turtles, you will need at least a three by five foot pen. be sure that you either put a wire or cement floor as they tend to dig out of dirt bottoms. also the sides of the pen should be solid so that they cannot see out or they will try to get out, which can cause stress. as for dogs, they will always be a problem, my shepard has caused me past problems as she has gotten into my backyard and heads straight for my tortoise pens.. she can smell them and picks up the smallest in her mouth and carries it to other parts of the yard. she has cost me one small russian tortoise to date, so be aware of all dogs that get access to your pen...
