Opionions on Breeding Yellow and Green Anacondas

ben_renick Apr 13, 2004 05:56 PM

I'm wondering about breeding yellow and green anacondas. I have gotten opinions from eunectes4, Arik, and Mr_Anaconda28 in my last posts about waterbowls over this subject. I have a 2 month old Female Green right now. I was thinking of purchasing a male yellow anaconda and houseing them and later on breeding them. Both would be babies when introduced. Their cage size would be 8'x2'6"x2' and will have a big enough water bowl that they both will be able to fit in for a very long time. If there is any info I left out just post it

Thanx,
Ben

I'm not much into hybrids but thats just a personal preference. I'll let someone else post about the specifics of breeding the two. However, I would still recomend separate cages. Almost all the occasions of cannibalism among green anacondas involved a female eating a male. Although they may live together a week, a month, or years, it is still a risk that I wouldn't take with my snakes. Imagine just getting them into breeding size and then BAM! That would be alot of wasted time and $ not to mention the chance of losing them both. One from being eaten and the other from over eating. Best of luck to ya though and I look forward to reading some posts about the specifics of crossing the two.

I dont know too much about the crosses...but i dont think a female green to a male yellow has ever been done...good luck. i know you have heard from me before and want other opinion but i really wish you luck if this is what you want to do...i dont think the green will be harmed from over eating but it isnt the best meal..not to mention expensive. there are many reports of females eating males after mating to prepare for the long fast until the babies are born. if you really want to mate them...i would really house them separate until they are ready for your attempt. I really really wanted to put a yellow in with my green since i have such a huge cage i didnt see much of a problem..but i wont because i am sure my green will eat it since it ate snakes before. i ran out of cage space one night and i have put my green in with a garter temporarily while cleaning before with no trouble. but the one night i housed them overnight...bulging belly in the anaconda. I hope more people share their opinion on this..maybe there isnt as much to worry as i think but of all my snakes i wouldnt trust anything with the green anaconda.

I didn't know you kept garters eunectes. I just thought I'd let you know that a few years ago me and my wife found an albino red sided garter in Grinnell, Iowa. I ended up selling it to Scott Felzer in N.C. for a pretty penny. You can see it on his web site(I dont know the link right now). Check it out. He lists credit to me on the photo too.
Sorry for not staying on topic.

i keep a large variety of snakes. the girl who got me really interested in snakes has a huge passion for garters(im not so sure why..but we all love different things). she breeds beardies, corns, kings, BCI's, ball python, red-tails, leopard geckos, and garters..all sorts of garters..she has a few albinos (so there is a wicked variety and she wants to get into other things too...i want to work with her on chondros and ATB's). My anaconda took down one i got from her that was het for bright red...oops.

Tell her to check out Scott's site. Not just for mine but he has alot of cool morphs. Even a person not into garders would appreciate it.
