Nikon D70!!!

dynomite Apr 13, 2004 06:02 PM

im buying the new nikon d70, i've finaly been converted by the digital cult from my old 35 mm ways, but anyways what i was wondering was if anyone here had experience with a microdrive as opposed to a memory card (namely the hitachi 2 gb ibm microdrive is what i have my eye on) or what you guys would recomend... also i have the nikon sb-28 flash and was wondering if anyone had tried putting that on a digital and see if it works, i paid a pretty penny and dont want to lose out on it, plus i heard that cannon's higher end flashes work with digital so i was hoping the same would apply to nikon.... also any other experiences tips or advice? thanx a lot. oh, also do digital cameras break down a lot? would it be worthwhile to buy insurence for it? (it cvers everything but theft and im not sure about fire, but if i drop it and it shatters into a billion pieces, i get a new one or if i drop it in water or if some internal thing goes wrong. im used to my good old fashioned 35 mm and have been reluctant to join the digital age so any comments would b appreciated, sorry fr the long post.

The D70 has gotten great reviews and I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.
If it were me, I'd get the extended warranty. There are repairs that will cost a lot to make if needed - like if the mirror assembly breaks, or if you drop it and break the lens mount.

There are a lot of people using the Hitachi microdrives. I'm currently waiting for a 4GB for my D100. (hint, you can by a Creative Labs MuVo with a 4gb hitachi already in it and remove the card, format it and use it in your camera - Cost - $200. Cost of drive alone - around $500) I've been reading what people are saying about it at www.dpreview.com and it works fine.

THe SB28 will work, but will will not have most of the functions available, such as flash sync and TTL. You'll want to get either the SB80 or the new SB-800. I had the same problem when I when to the DSLR.

I highly suggest dpreview.com - there is a D70 specific forum there. You will have to wade through a lot of crud about the D&0 and occasional moire problems but it's still a good resource. There is also a forum for storage media, and you'll be able to read about the microdrives and other options there.

thanx for the info, i got it and im really happy with it (i hope i still use my f100 tho, dont wanna let that beauty go to waste) i tested my flash, it works ok, at least good enough for now, but thanx for the heads up on that mu vo thing, im gonna look into it... although i was kind of thinking about using a 512 mb extreme card and an extra 120 gb hardrive for under 200 or the microdrive. (i bought a normail 250 mb card for while i make my choice). thanx again, the camera is awsome. (the pic was taken through glass with the light of his heating light so its not the best, but its what i've had time to take)

I recently got a D70 and a 1gb microdrive, and am very happy with the results.
The md gives around 650 prints at a fairly hi res, more than enough for an average vacation, and you can just shoot away
and only print what you need.
Heres a pic i took last week while on vacation in Italy,
its of a wall lizard in Pompei.
D70's rock.
