Color Change Pics and a ? on weight

Rob Jenkins Jun 13, 2003 10:07 PM

I'm amazed at how much Kirby's color can change in a short amount of time (minutes). This first picture is when we first got him, but he usually gets this color after he's been up for a while.

And this is one we took tonight and is how he normally looks during the day and when he's first getting up at night. He actually is a little lighter, but he'd been out a little while when we got the picture.

Lastly - He's about a year old and 32 grams. Sounds light to me, what do you think? He won't eat crickets every night, but does eat 3-5 every other or third day. I put them in a bowl w/out legs each night. I got him to eat some of the CGD last night. I'll try to keep his diet varied (CGD/Baby food), but always offer crickets. Other than this, any ideas to fatten him up? I've seen other cresteds that are much fatter than Kirby.

Thanks

Well if conditions are right etc then they eat what they think is enough for them. Some cresties eat like 10-12 crix everynight! so i wouldnt worry too much. However if you really are desperate at fattening him up, this guy told me once to try a CGD/mealworm combo. I dunno if its healthy but it did the fattening part (Emphasize that it might not be healthy at all for gecko) i for myself jsut go with crix and cgd everynight.

If he is only accepting 3-5 crix every 2-3 days, that would keep him on the light side. If he eats babyfood or the CGD regularly, I would go with those food choices for now. You need to add protien to the babyfood. This is can be done by adding turkey baby food to the fruit baby food. I use a 2:1 mix(fruit:meat). I always use the same mix, which is, 1 peach, 1 banana, and 1 turkey. I add a supplement called Performance Plus Gecko to this mix. You can check it out at herpnutrition.com. I also have several of my Rhacs on a CGD diet only.
good luck

Hey Rob,
Some cresties are just stubborn feeders with the crix. Just keep leaving a few every night in his bowl and offer him the baby food with meat like bill said. That will fatten him up real quick. Males do tend to be skinnier then the females, you’re looking at an ideal weight of 40-50 grams depending on his size.
