Abnormal shedding / pic ...... your opinions?

kephy Apr 13, 2004 09:22 PM

If it's not one thing it's another, right? Well as soon as Ocho started getting better from 2 months of intestinal parasites and medication bombardments...... this showed up on his tail and leg.

My vet says not to worry yet, that with all the stress he's been through this could just be a temporary thing, to keep giving him soaks and applying friction(which I am.) But how can I not worry?! This is wierd! And it's really showing no signs of coming off since I noticed it 2 weeks ago. The patch on his tail does not look like normal shed, it is whiter than normal, and feels soft to the touch. I managed to get one scale off, and right under it was another white scale!

What do you guys think, have you seen anything like this? Is this something that can happen with a lot of sickness and stress? The last time my vet saw it, it did look like normal shed so I can see why he isn't too concerned, but I think it looks worse since then. Maybe I'm over reacting, but I really love my guy and I want him to be BETTER! He's been through so much already. The last thing we need is another problem.

my male has sheds that started out looking somewhat similiar to that and turned out fine, but it wasn't quite as extreme looking.

It doesn't look like anything to worry about but 2 weeks is a long time. What is the humidity in the cage. Soaking is good but you need to have a dry enviornment for the skin to peel away. to much humidity is bad.

Without actually seeing it I cant say for sure but if you want to try something a bit different... I gave one of my BDs a mud pack (cosmetic counter) that pulls impurities from the skin. Did it every day for almost a week. Let it dry and wash it off. It worked for me.

I don't know the exact humidity. I know it is low. It stays warm and dry in his cage. I had a humidity guage but it got malfunctional so I tossed it, and I haven't bought a new one. There is no water dish, nothing that would raise the humidity, and he had a full easy shed just a few months ago so I figured it was fine.

I have some face mask stuff, I'm pretty sure that's what you described. I suppose that's worth a shot. I also heard about people using vegetable oil or something? But that seems like it would prevent the skin from drying like you said it needs to do... I think the skin is pretty soft and I'm surprised it doesn't peel off like it normally would.

A good mud mask can be purchased at a health food store.

I'm currently applying Vaseline on it to moisten up the skin. I'm not worried about mine because it doesn't go all the way around the tail. If it did, I'd be a lot more worried about skin constriction. But I swear to Draconis has the same spot right there. Maybe it's some sort of new BD fashion statement...
