What is the breeding age for females???

reflex21089 Jun 13, 2003 10:27 PM

I was wondering what the breeding age for females is because i have a 4 month old female (pictured) who is 6-7in long and between 36 and 37g....im guessing this is large for her age ad i was wondering i by the time she reaches 45g if i would be able to breed her which should be within the next month or 2. Last month she weighed in at 27g. Since shes so young should i weight till she gets to 50g to breed her. She will be bred to a male that weighes 50g and is 11 months old and 7 1/2" long( i know he is very short, he has a very short tail as you can see in the 2nd pic....he no longer weighs 32g tho he weighs 50 as stated above)
thanks in advance....

I've read on this forum several times that it's best to wait till they're 10 months or older and not to breed until she's 50 to 55 grams. This is for the health of your girl. Also, I've read that you should breed only once per year (she may have up to 6 or 8 clutches from the one breeding) to give her a chance to rest until next year.

Also, if you do your research, you'll find some care sheets and some web sites that give more information. I found most of my information doing searches using "Google.com" (where I found Kingsnake.com and this forum). Just put in 'leopard gecko' and 'breeding' or any variation of what you want info for and start reading!!! (if this is redundant for you, just ignore.

Happy breeding!

the longer you wait the better. the minimum is 40g, but 50g is the best. she will really aprechiate it if you wait for her to be a year old.

Thanks a lot thats what i thought i knew the minimum weight was 40g but i figured i would wait until shes 45g-50g...and i will wait until shes a year just to save her the stress....

Breeding before 10 month of age, even if she is fat and healthy over 50 grams, will often/usually result in infertile eggs- a waste of her resources. Once they are a year old and of proper weight most female leos are ready to produce fetile eggs.
