It's a ground skink - Scincella lateralis

I used to find them all the time when I lived in Galveston. They are also common in wooded areas here in Missouri, and range over much of the eastern US.

it sure looks to my like a southern prarie to me
I don't know why every one says its a ground skink

You know I was looking at it. It did not seem to have the markings of a grouns skink. We have ground skinks here in KY and I never remember seeing a white line like that underneath the dark line. I was leaning towards Southern prairie or even a coal skink.

Good call.

Check the photos of ground, prairie and coal skinks on these two pages:

www.conservation.state.mo.us/nathis/herpetol/molizard/liz3.htm

www.conservation.state.mo.us/nathis/herpetol/molizard/liz4.htm

To my eye the prairie and coal skinks have more lines that are far more distinct than the ground skink. The photo in the OP looks much more like the ground skink to me.
