Why can't us herpers be left alone? Why are all these laws even being proposed?

ram Jun 13, 2003 10:30 PM

It just irritates me how all these people have nothing better to do than to stop people from keeping repiltes? It is unfair that all these herp laws are even being proposed and some passed and yet all the other pet keepers (the fish, birds, and mammals) don't have to deal with this? It's those people who know nothing about herps who are proposing all these damn laws! What happened to that law that sais we are entitles to live free and pursuit hapiness? We aren't bother anyone with breeding reptiles, that's more than I can say for people who own dogs and such, their pets injure and kill far more people than our herps. It sucks how people can own sharks that will take your hand off the second it is put in their tank but us herpers can't own a snake in some areas. Your point of view will be appreciated, thanks for reading.

One reason is HSUS has nothing else to do. The second reason is pet stores and carnivals getting reptiles to idiots. I am hearing more and more about people driving to Florida and southern states and releasing iguanas, etc There are more strays with no owners all the time. There are stray dogs and cats, but reptiles scare more people.

WE need to police our own a little better and oppose carnival give aways, etc.

They are just trying to take all of our rights because they are scared. We are not trying to fight the law in our town from passing. But now since all this moneypoxs crap has come up it is really making it hard for anyone to fight anything on exotic pets. But they do not bring up all the animals here that kill people. Like horses, dogs even cows. Cats carry diseases but you dont hear nothing about that do you? Nope because they are every where. They need to find a way to fix cats and dogs so there is not so many being put in shelters instead of bothering us the ones who keep our pets put up. You dont see snakes running the neighborhood breeding everything in site. They dont come home and dump babies of who knows what on your door step. I am sick to death of all of it but what acan we do other than get the facts and put them in front of these people. Which I am beginning to think that aint going to do any good. All I can say is there is going to be alot of people out here that is going to have reptiles and noone is going to know unless something happens at their home. THen it will be bad for that person. I just wish people would learn about them instead of saying oh I dont like them they are scary. I know I have took our big one to school to show the kids there is nothing to be afraid of and they loved him. But the parents are like no dont be around them they are bad. Hell who know if they would give them a chance they might like them. Ya never know til you try. All we can do is just keep educating the kids maybe then it will rub off on the parents and make things easier for us. The are our future ya know. Hope everyone is having a good weekend!!!!

These big animal rights groups view our hobby (and exotics in general) as an easy first step. First step to what? First step to banning ALL animals from private ownership. Think about it. If they can start out with exotics like tigers and such (NOT saying private ownership of such animals is ok, it should be regulated, not banned, which they strive for), then go on to reptiles, the next step it to look at dogs and cats and birds and fish. We do need to stop all this before it starts getting out-of-hand. If these nuts had it their way, everyone would be vegan (and very skinny too!), animals and humans would have no contact, etc, etc.

Very Good Point.

Very well put. The biggest problem being that huge misnomer we all know as HSUS, gets a lot more funding than it would get if the only members it had were true animal rights activist. Just think, if that were the case, HSUS wouldn't have the funding to push such nonsense as proposition #1468. Instead they would be worrying about keeping their six figure a year jobs. Does anybody out there have any ideas how to be effectively proactive against these nuts without risking a lawsuit? I just can't help but feel that if we lose our hobby because of HSUS, it will our own fault for not educating the public a lot better. There should be a proposition to make them change their name, and come clean to all of their contributers as to what they are really all about. I have limited knowledge when it comes to politics, so any ideas, please share. God bless.
Alan,

I wish we could find someone to help us. I hate to see all these laws passed. Believe me we are trying to keep it from passing here. Now since all this monkeypox has come out they are realy hitting us hard. Now they are saying everything has something. We are trying to get PIJAC to help us. But so far no news from them. If anyone knows anyone that can help please post it so everyone can see it. I wish there was someone up in the higher up that could help. I know they are trying to put all the PDs to sleep here. Is that not wrong to put a living animal to sleep? I would think that it is but what do I know I am just an exotic lover. Please help anyone. Thanks
Have a good day!

Best to deal with facts. I bred birds for 20 years, from approx 1970 to 1990, in florida, and during that time regs were introduced and licensing procedures put in place that are like those we're dealing with re: reptiles. And with mammals there are even MORE regulations: I have to get my cats inoculated, annual relicensing, etc.--anybody making you do that with each of your reptiles? I didn't think so! Agricultural mammals are even more closely monitored and regulated, with good reason I think.

I'd recommend any of several books about what life was like during the big outbreaks of plague. Not ALL of the animal regs are part of a vast conspiracy to prevent you from keeping a snake or turtle or lizard.
