positive, except for one,..glowed bright red when candled...a whole mass of veins, i know how to tell if an egg is definatly fertile or not, 3 were definatly fertile, 1 was yellow and soft so that one had no chance..i have to buy a hovobator..get all my things straight..and then start breeding again...maybe in a year or so...depends

I use a styrofoam ice chest incubator and have yet to have a problem. I wonder why you're losing your eggs.

tokay_dude1 Apr 14, 2004 12:00 AM

well..ever since i started getting back into leos i've had nothing but horrible luck...i've had 4 die so fat and 2 sick that stay at my friends house because i dont want them infecting my colony..as for why my eggs are all dieing..my guess is im doing somthing wrong...i've never bred any leos befor but i did keep them and have around 15 in 97-99, so this is my first time ever having eggs, i really did expect this to happen, seeing as how it's never always perfect,i belive that only some geckos han be as hardy as they say...maybe 4 out of 2,000 wont be as hardy..i mean..i've had iguanas all my life..they were my first herps, and ig's are not easy to care for, i've had my 2 adult ig's for 10 years now without one problem, lol i started with leos again in september..and it hasnt been to great, im sure my luck will change in time, i feel like giving up but i wont...oh..and please...whoever reads this take no offence to anything you guys might find offensive here...i didnt mean for it to be offensive...im just stating how i feel..i'll have to buy a hovobator, thermostat, humidity gauge...and whatever sle i need for these eggs..its worth it though...sorry for the rant...lol

Danny,

Remember that a lot of your leos are first time breeders so this may somewhat affect the hatch rate. To stack the odds in your favor definately invest in a hovabator, a good thermometer and a good scale then follow the directions on http://www.albeysreptiles.com/incubate-eggs.htm

I had my hatch rate increase dramatically after adopting Albey's technique. If you're short on funds, a cheap postage scale ($12) works just as well as a digital one. I got my hovabator pretty cheap on ebay. The only really expensive component is my digital thermometer ($35).

I used to just throw a box with damp vermiculite in one of my leo tanks and incubate the eggs in there, but I lost over 25% using this method.

Don't give up
Alice

tokay_dude1 Apr 14, 2004 12:41 AM

Thank you alice
i wont give up, i definatly will invest in a hovobator,thermometer,scale..whatever i need
i do have that "i and my leos are first time breeders so chances are i might not get any hatchlings my first or second try) buts its a real bummer having 4 out of 5 eggs die on you in 2 days,i just hope there is still a chance for this last egg..if not, then if at first i dont exceed, try again...lol

again, thank you for your post alice

I'm not sure why, but I almost always lose my first few clutches of the season. I do everything the same, but I always seem to have better luck with "the second wave". Your females will probably keep layinging through the summer so you could still hatch some babies this year. Using the .8 parts water to 1 part perlite by weight (if you're not doing this already) should really help. I think that part of the reason I used to lose so many eggs was too much moisture. Has Trinity laid / been bred, because from your pics she looks like she is ready to be a great mommy.

hmm..once i get a scale i will definatly try the albey method, right now i've just been letting the perite soak and then sqeezing the access water out...
Unfortunatly no...big far Trinity is being stubborn, i've been trying for at least 2 months now with my male jungle albino to het some nice hets, but nooo she has to turn around and bite the hell out if him...so i've decided to have her as the "pet" and everyone in my family refers to her as the "queen". lol, im going to a show on sunday and i'll be buying some nice albinos from alberto, so hopefully after quarentine they'll be ready to breed and by then i'll have everything ready

also, where do i even look for a pstage scale?

thanks
Danny

Not sure if you looking for any now, but there is a link up at the top for digital thermometers and humidity gages. 50% off. Thats a good deal.

aliceinwl Apr 14, 2004 01:19 AM

I got mine at Office Depot.

Soaking the perlite means that you've probably got way too much water. The perlite should feel slightly damp to the touch, but not wet. I put my container on the scale (empty) and note the weight. I then add perlite and subtract the weight of the container (the cheap scales don't have a tare). Then, multiply the weight of perlite by .8 and that's how much water I add. I add water with a squirt bottle until it reaches the proper weight. Then, I stir up the perlite to make sure that it's evenly moistened.

I suggest, as a last ditch effort to save your remaining egg, setting up a new container and just trying to dampen the perlite.

well when i strain all the water out of the perlite its pretty damp..im going to go out saturday and look for all this stuff digital thermometer...humidity gauge(i know where to get that already), scale.. and i already ordered the hovobator package from LLLreptile...as for my other egg...it's doing OK..still plump and white....i have my fingers crossed for this one....

shuler06 Apr 14, 2004 02:36 AM

What was posted about first time breeders on this thread I have found to be true, their first clutch(s) don't usually make it. There are exceptions. Also if you are using vermiculite, just damp is good enough. I find when it is too wet, that's when the mold shows up. As Marcia at GGG told me dry is better than wet. My vermiculite in my hovabators only has a touch of wetness to it. Also I bought a combo digi thermometer and hygrometer at Wal-Mart for about $15.

You will get it my friend just keep trying.

Ive lost alot of my fertile eggs this year..im left with 4 out of 12 definitely fertile eggs, not counting a few others.
I saw heartbeats and everything, then....they just died. Not all dented, just died. The embryo's were frozen in place.

I dunno...but
Last year I had great success and incubated all of my egg in the upper 80's...and this year im incubating for the first time in the low 80's. Maybe thats it? I dunno.

Oh no!! That's no good. If you're having this bad of luck, I'm afraid my two little fat tail eggies aren't going to be good I'm sorry to hear about the bad eggs though, maybe next time?? I'm sure it's nothing you're doing, um..blame the weather! That's it. Sorry, just trying to give you someone else to blame.
