What not to do...

ChuUtena Apr 14, 2004 12:47 AM

It's late, but I can't seem to roll over in bed and fall asleep. So I'm going to post some things I've learned NOT to do in relation to my gecko keeping. All of these pertain to me, and well I'm not sound in the head when it comes to my geckos. So please, laugh at me, but do it with a smile...LOL

1. Do NOT keep large amounts of crickets in a rubbermaid tub in your closet. Crickets stink, and so will your clothes.
2. Do NOT allow your 6 month of cat to attempt to crawl inside your leos rack. He will scare the leos, and try to eat the crickets himself.
3. Do NOT go to a reptile show with more money on you than you want to spend. ex. Don't go with $200 when you don't want to spend more than $150.
4. Do NOT buy more crickets than you can use in about a week and a half. Crickets die, and then they stink...refer back to #1.
5. Don't let crickets die in your geckos water bowl, because then they stink...lol (can you tell I'm not a fan of crickets?)
6. Be careful how you wiggle your fingers in front of a hungry leo...unless you think it's funny then go right ahead and watch them try and munch!
7. Do NOT let you parents know the real amount of geckos you have, or they may try and commit you.
8. Do NOT leave the lid off a container of supers, or you WILL be finding them around the house for about a week or two.
9. Do NOT buy a rack without knowing exactly how hot it will get, or you will be like me and have a huge waste of a rack in your bedroom.
and 10. Do NOT let people tell you that you have a leo problem because you have TOO many, you can only have a leo problem if you don't have enough!

Okay sorry boys and girls, I'm dead tired and if I called my boyfriend and rambled right now, I'm pretty sure I would be yelled at, or ignored lol that'll teach me to eat leftover easter candy. Goodnight everyone!!

I too had a mealworm outbreak in my room. They were on a shelf in my closet. They were all over the floor, the shelf, and everything inbetween. Including clothes. IT took me a few hours, but after checking every piece of cloth, moving every piece of furniture, and checking all of the cracks in the carpet, i found about 2-300 in my room. I havnt seen any more, that was two weeks ago. I'm probably gonna start seeing little brown beetles. Lol, they'll probably mate and i'll have to get the exterminater out here.

Cricket escapes are worse

When I ordered my first box of 1000 (I can't fathom why) my mom thought that she should open the box to check on them. She then kind of taped it shut. When I got home from work...

Mealworms need moisture and food to survive. Unless you've got pieces of potatoes, fruits, veggies, etc. laying around, they'll probably die within a week or two.

they may not need fruit, but they need moisture. Ever stuck mealworms in your lizard tank without any moisture eg: fruit, slice of potatoe, etc? And found them the next day in the water bowl?

They seek it out. Now unless your spill water or fruit punch or something on your carpet daily...they'll die without that moisture. Hence why you will only see them hanging around for maybe 2-3 weeks at most.

Ya its late here too, 2:30 am actually.

I've just spent the last 3-4 hours sitting here waiting to hear from my brother who went to help a friend get his truck unstuck on some back trails. He's home now....thankfully. Note to self, buy brother a phone LOL I pretty much raised both boys so when they disappear for hours at a time after saying they will call or be home soon i get rather paranoid.

I love the list you posted. I needed to have a good laugh. I remember the days when i kept a close watch on my room, hiding the fact i had geckos from my family. Back then the youngest of my brothers had the bedroom across the hall (now mine) and he could hear the crickets (i hid them in the closet too). One day my mom asked me how they were doing........they had known all along. Yes parents have a sixth sense...LOL

I was going to post a pic of myself but its disappeared from my computer....i must have saved it to disk. I'll try to get another one with a gecko in hand and hopefully not scare everyone off the forum HAHAHA.

P.S. I don'tusually come in here after 1am so all of my geckos were rather unhappy that i turned on the lights. Almost all of them were out (Zoe still is) but now the rest have decided hiding is best. hehe.
