Genetic

cornsnake234 Apr 14, 2004 09:39 AM

I know it's a stupid question, but i'm wondering, what are the possible parents of an hypo corn!?! does only two hypo corn can give baby hypo? or a mix of amel and normal corn can do the same job!?!

And... what about amel!? what combinations can be possible to finish with baby amel!?

thanks

amel and hypo are both "simple ressesive" traits, so both parents would have to carry the hypo gene to get hypo's and both need the amel gene to get amel's. they can be het carrying but not showing the trait), or homo-(showing the trait) but either way, both parents have to carry it to make babies who show it. It's early, that made sense right?

Thanks!!

But, how was produced the first hypo.... and the firs amel!? mutation!?

well, right now there appears to be three seperate hypo genes out there, that aren't compatible with each other. I don't know who made the first of each, but as far as I can remember, every simple ressesive trait has been discovered pretty much by accident. The only reason they are so abundant today is because of selective and/or line breeding to duplicate the ressesive gene.

Is there a visual difference between those three hypo genes!?

And also... is it possible for an hypo, to have two parents that were not hypo but were only carrying the gene!? i mean for exemple a male anery het hypo with a female also anery het hypo!?!? and if it is possible, can the baby hypo resulting of this crossing be het for anery!?!?

Thanks!

Well, if you bred anerys together you would get all anerys. Since you are talking about breeding anery het hypo's together, you would get all anerys, but some would be het hypo and some would be hypo. Therefore you would have anery hypos, aka ghosts.

As for the first of their kind, Dr. Bernard Betchel bred the first amels in captivity back in the 50's i beleive. As for the hypos, I THINK the Love's produced the first hypos in cahoots with a lesser known Jack Cole, back in the ealry 80's (???) maybe? You'll have to ask Kathy Love. Anyway, yes, all morphs are mutations that just randomely pop up after several breedings. Many times, wild caught corns are het for these weird mutations and it just takes some inbreeding to have the trait pop up.

Someday, I plan on going out to a random locale, catching a few pairs of corns and breeding them back to see if they have any cool new traits hiding in their 'jeans' .... then i'll make a zillion dollars$$ !! lol
