Firebellies "wrestling"

SK Apr 14, 2004 12:29 PM

Hi there,

I'm new to keeping FBT's. I've worked in a pet store for a long time and have had plenty of opportunities to observe them. I had 1 FBT and decided to add a 2nd one the other day. They're both eating fine and seemed to be enjoying eachother. This morning though they startled wrestling. Literally! They'd entangle themselves belly to belly and flop around, then get back up and do some more. They weren't biting eachother, and if they'd land on eachother's back they'd make little noises. I thought I had 1 male and 1 female, as one's back is not as bumpy as the other's but I'm certainly not sure. Is this breeding behavior? Aggressive behavior? Should I separate them or sit back and enjoy the show? They are apart now and just hangin out. Thanks for your help.

Hey! My fire bellied toads do that occasionally as well. I have twelve of them in a 50 gallon tank. Sometimes it looks like one is just horny and trying to mate, and the one he is going after is really trying to fight him off. And yeah, they will be belly to belly. I never thought of it as anything serious though. Hopefully someone else will have a better answer for you!

Thanks Tanzee,,,,,,you're reply is just the reassurance I needed not to separate them and/or worry about their behavior.

no need to seperate. they are just trying to assert ones domanance. they won't hurt each other. it's all natural.
