SICK GECKO- PLEASE RESPOND

TAloha19 Apr 14, 2004 06:34 PM

I posted this a few days ago, but only got one response. My 5 month old gecko stopped eating out of no where. Being a very hearty eater, this worries me. She usually will eat 7 mealworms a night. Friday she at about 4, and each day since, she's only eaten maybe one.
I tried switching to crickets to see if she was bored with the mealies - she only ate one of those too.
I know they slow down eating when they get older, but at what age? What can I do to make sure she eats?
I don't think it's impaction because she did a little poop on Saturday. But, she hasn't pooped again because she isn't eating.

Also, I don't know if this has anything to do with it- but she's been trying to get out of her cage all week too. Trying to climb up the sides all the time. When I stick my hand in to try and offer her some food (I hand feed her a lot) she ignores the food and tries to climb on my hand to get out. She's never done this before

I've got one maybe a few months older with the exact same behaviour. Wen I put mealworms in she tries to climb my hand. She often walks right over her buddy in the process. Her cage-mate will eat about 15 big superworms a week. I have tried many different temperatures with no luck.

Good luck trying to find a way to feed your gecko and sorry I couldn't answer your questions. I thought it might be comforting knowing your not the only person with this problem.

Is there any chance she is gravid (even if she hasn't been exposed to a male) and trying to find a spot to lay eggs? The behavior you are describing sounds like that's what may be wrong.

well alot of people get really worried when leos out of the blue just stop eating. It is no big deal I did the same thing years ago when I had the same thing happen. Leos tend to be like people every one is different. Some will eat till they puke every day. Some will eat like hogs for a while then quit for a while. Some will eat steady every day never hogging or not eating. The only time I really worry is when I notice the fat contents in their tail getting really low. I try wax worms to get them to eat and fatten them up. Have never lost a leo that I hatched due to not eating except some babies just won't eat right out of the egg and are unsaveable.
