harberrat Apr 14, 2004 07:19 PM

i purchased a small potted plant labelled 'wheat grass' at my local petstore. i intended it for my parakeets as they had the same in thier parakeet enclosure and they were going nuts over it. i sectioned it in fours and gave it to my keets and they loved it. i thought maybe i could give it to my mali also. does anyone know anything about this plant? it looks like regular ol' grass. thanks for your replies.

Any type of grass is a high energy food perhaps one of the most energetic foods an herbivore can find. I will provide my uromastyx with grass ASAP will also liberally use clover and dandelion, these will be my main foods this summer.

Also it’s my belief that grass is the plant material the produces the most heat when digesting or decaying, therefore of great use in thermoregulation, something worth considering with reptiles that are subjected too much lower knight temperatures.

I have not looked at the specifics of wheatgrass.

My primary computer is in the shop so I do not have the luxury of my favorite resources or files at my fingertips.

A quick glance tells me that the Ca:P ratio may be similar and the protein level seems a little high for what I would feed on a continual basis. This would not necessarily rule it out as a food source but would probably lead me down the path of not using it as a staple until I could do more research.
Just my quick 2 cents (or penny)

(Wheatgrass should be fine to feed in limited portions if that is what you are asking.)
