are there any good free roaming lizards?

kyle1414 Apr 14, 2004 07:37 PM

I asked my dad why I cant get a savannah monitor and put it in an 8*4 or another large cage and he said when lizards got that big they need a room, so I was wondering are there any good free-roamers? Something that could walk around the house like a dog or walk around on a certain floor and have food in one specific area. I would like to have an outdoor cage but we could only keep a lizard outside for about 4 or 5 months unless there is a lizard that I dont know of that can tolerate could temperature.

kyle- Who doesn't think either idea will work.

No, unless you plan on keeping your home a balmy 80-85 degrees.

In a herp room with warm temperature zones, many gecko species can be kept as free roamers. Even in cold Germany I have very good experiences with some of these. They thrive and multiply readily. Most recommendable isd Cosymbotus platyurus. Hemidactylus frenatus , Tokays and the like do also work quite well.

He was talking about something having the run of his whole house, and he mentioned that the temperatures were cool--tokays won't do well at 70 degrees Farenheit, either.

My 4ft iggy has free roam of the house. HOWEVER: since iggys are creatures of habit, she DOES have a basking/sleeping roost. She has also been taught to poop in the bathroom. THE PROBLEM LIES IN OBTAINING THE IGGY: you need a cage for a juvie...for a while. 2 yrs at least. Then if the ig is ok temperment wise you may be able to train him. who knows. Also, my reptile room (Where sunny's roost is) stays at a constant 80*.
