Is it best to feed live fish or frozen/thawed?

Lyn Apr 14, 2004 09:05 PM

I'm still waiting for pics of my new "Southern" Waternsnake. My friend took pics on Saturday but has been too busy to send them to me. He said the eye is crusted over and they want to keep it until it heals completely. Looks like he might lose the eye.

I want to be fully prepared before my new snake (I've named him Ripley) comes home. I'm curious if you guys think it best to feed live, frozen/thawed, or a combination. Also, what types of fish do you think are best? The local store sells live Rosies and Goldfish, the grocery store sells frozen smelt. I don't know where to get minnows.

I'll post pics of Ripley as soon as my friend emails them to me. I'm curious what type of Southern Water he is.

its better to feed live goldfishes or minnows try a bait shop for minnows or if you can catch frogs and salamanders would be nice

It is better to feed neither. Live goldfish contain parasites, frozen goldfish contain high levels of Thiaminase which can cause vitamin b deficiency. I would feed wild caught baitfish that can be frozen, along with mice.
