Newspaper or Repti bark?

smith710 Apr 14, 2004 09:09 PM

Hi, I was just wondering what was a better substrate for my 2 columbian red tails. I feed them in a different cage so it doesnt do anything to their feeding but I was just wondering what would be a better one. Or if there is anything else that you think is better that you can tell me about tell me please.
Thank You

Aspen bedding has worked well for my Hogg the past 2 years. I've been tempted to go with the Repti bark because I like the look but Aspen is just so much cheaper. Also, you're supposed to clean the Repti bark (you could just replace it but that would be ridiculously expensive) while the Aspen is just discarded.

The first substrate I ever used was Reptibark. I never really liked how dusty it was, and I don't think my boa liked it either.

After that I switched to newspaper. It was good and cheap, but not very nice to look at (which is important to me). Also, I didn't like that when my boa came out of its water bowl it would get the newspaper wet, which would make the ink run and often my boa would get it all over her belly.

Now I am using reptile carpet from JustHerps.com
My boa and I both love it. It is cheap, reusable, easy to clean and nice to look at. I will never use anything else.
