Setting Up a fan system

markj Jun 14, 2003 02:11 AM

Well, I have tried a number of ways to keep the heat down on my new tank, I made a screen front for the bowfront with velcro(major pain!) drilled more holes, directed a fan at the light. The directing the fan worked rather well, reduced temp 1-1.5 degrees. I searched the old forum a while ago looking for directions and got some good stuff. I know how to do it, but I want to have 2 fans, 1 pulling hot air out of the lighting fixture and one either pulling air out or pushing air into the tank. Is there a ac/dc converter that can run two? Also are there good ones at radio shack or should I try a place like a hardware store or Fry's electronics? Thanks everyone!
Mark

How hot is your tank getting? Be careful with too many fans, you could drop your humitiy too low, and kill your frogs. I run a 80mm fan on my 20gal high, and it only runs about 4mins and hour. On my Azureus tank I run a 40mm fan turned way down all day, but it moves very little air. If your tank is getting too hot from the lights then I would say move the lights up off the tank.

hello all
well this is the first time i heard anything about putting fans in the tank. maybe because i havent been on the forum long enough. well my question is how many fan would i need in my tank. it is a fifty gallon critter tank fully planted with a waterfall and a pond the top is about 90% covered with a glass top and i have one of those compact light for saltwater tanks which i bought from the fish store. any information on this like where can i get the fan, what type to get do i really need a fan and any other info. that you guys could give me would be great. thanks for all your help.

I would not put a fan in the tank. At least I hope you did not take that from what I wrote. I use the fans to blow air into the tank, but like I said just a little. It will all depend on your setup, and size of tank. My azureus tank stays about room temp which is 70-72, but my humidity is about 90%. You have to make sure to keep both in line.

The temp is usually up high in the 70's or around 81. I am not afraid of losing humidity, withough spraying it is at 99% and has been for the past 3 weeks, I have a large pond area that keeps it nice and moist. Also, about the lifting of the fixture, won't I lose some light? And how would I go about doing this since the tank is about 5 and half feet from the cieling? Using chains and some anchors? Thanks!

well i got my plants planted yesterday and we think we have gotten the air conditioner fixed. i have two fans blowing air into the tank and one blowing air onto the light (the light is around 6 inches above the tank). As of right now, I run my fans all day, except for when i mist. I have them programed to turn off once it starts misting and it turns on 5 minutes after the mist has disolved. im showing no adverse effects on the temperature or humidity. yesterday even when i was planting my tank the humidty remianed high (high on my read out is 95% ). My tank is a 38 gallon and is 3 feet long. I can turn my fans on nearly wide open and the plants wont sway in the breeze but i keep it set a little lower then wide open.

Some people just use small piece of wood under each side.

SO WHAT YOU ARE SAYING IS THAT IT IS NOT NECESSARY FOR ME TO SET UP A FAN SYSTEM.

kyle1745 Jun 14, 2003 05:31 PM

It all depends on what your needs are. I use my fans to keep the glass from fogging up, and maybe to help get a little fresh air in the tanks. I have read a lot of people who have solved heat problems by just moving the lights up from the tank 3-4 inches. Could also lower the room temp also. I keep my house at 72-74 so this is not too much of an issue.

Yes, I'm also trying to get rid of some fog on the glass too. I'll try the raising the light a few inches see if that will help heat and humidity. Thanks!

rc_racer_007 Jun 14, 2003 05:44 PM

mainly im using mine for de-fogging the glass and circulating the air for my air plants, because they need circulating air. But i havent noticed a temperature drop with my fans from room temperature. my tank stays about 1-2 warmer then my room, i guess becuase of the canopy i have ontop.

you just want to try a set up without the fans, and if you dont think its going like you think and fans will help give them a atry.
