How long do crikets/mealworms last?

lizzylizard Apr 15, 2004 03:26 AM

If you feed small crickets how long will they last? and how long will mealworms last in the fridge?

I will have 3 juvie leos and one pacman frog (eats about 4 crickets a day)

I'm asking because I want to start ordering food from the web. I don't trust my pet stores cleanliness. The crickets only come in sets of 50 (too little) or 250 (too many). The meal worms only come in 250, if they last a long time in the fridge then that will be ok.

a crickets lifespan will expire after 6 weeks, i think i may have read somewhere that mealworms may live 6-8 weeks

if you're getting 3 leos and feeding baby crickets then i'd suggest getting at least 500-1000, as for mealworms 250 will do and they'll last you considerably long time
hope this helps..

I thought they only eat about 5 a day

well, it depends on what food item you will be feeding them, if its 3 leos and you get baby crickets i think maybe 500 will last you a pretty long time, when i started geting back into leos ai had 4 baby leos and went through 100 crickets every 2 weeks...

I wish they had a package for 100 crickets. I don't want to keep them for more than two weeks.

if you keep your mealworms in the fridge, they might not last as long and loose most of their "nutritional value" from the cold, from my experiences with this the mealworms only lasted 3 1/2 weeks...

Every time I've bought them from the pet store they have turned into beetles within a week.

For your mealworms, keep them in a plastic containers with some wheat bran. As for the beetle, you can keep them in a separate container and they will lay eggs and make more mealworms ! I use about 1800 mealworms a year and i dont buy more than a hundred a year Crickets, i dont buy more than 50 at a times, cause they dont last very long.

wow that would save me a lot of money, but I think I'm too grossed out by them to breed them. I have a hard enough time sharing my house with 10 of them lol.
