Problem with a gecko and sexing question too

peachskittles Apr 15, 2004 10:25 AM

Alright I bought a pair of leopard geckos 3 weeks ago. They were sold to me as my blizzard being a male and my albino being a female. Well over the past week the female has almost completely stopped eating and is getting super skinny. They get mealies and crickets every other night. I've seen her gnaw down a few mealies but nothing substantial. I'm wondering how can I fatten her up again. They have a few hiding places, basking lamp, a calcium dish, and a water dish. It gets 85 degrees on the warm side and 75 on the cool side.
My sexing question came to me yesterday. My male leopard gecko started digging in the sand which I find extremely weird. I know I've read that females do that when they want to lay there eggs so now I'm wondering if my male is actually female. Is there a site that shows me pictures of male and female anatomy of a leopard gecko? I have a book that has the pictures but it isn't helping me much. Thanks everybody.

How old are they?...if they're adults or somewhere close to it it should be very easy to tell...males have a very obvious v-shaped row of scales with pores in them above the vent, and two obvious bumps at the base of the tail.

This is a male:

this is the same male a few months ago...size and age make quite a difference! He looks like a female here:

This is a young female:

Your temps are too low, raise the warm side up more, see if that helps. Try a basking light if you dont have a dimmer.

Is she possibly gravid? Check her belly to see if you see eggs.
That could possibly be why.
How old is she? weight?

Im not certain, but I think its either due to being pregnant, or your temps being low.

Let us know.

What should the warm side be at? I thought 85 was a good temp but I could be mistaken. Also, she looks a little too skinny to have eggs but I could be mistaken. I don't have a scale to weigh her right now. Thank you for your help tho. This is my first pair and I hate worrying.

I don't see an edit message button unfortunately so adding one thing. They both are right around a year old.
