Vivarium question

wasabigirl Apr 15, 2004 11:12 AM

Hi,
I'm looking into getting a water dragon or two and in doing my research, I'm trying to figure out what kind of vivarium I need. Do open air vivs work, like cameleon cages, or do they need to be enclosed like desert lizards and snakes?

Thanks!

Water dragons need a high level of humidity and heat, which is easiest to maintain in a closed cage. Usually, a cage with three sides wood and a glass or plexi front works best. They do not need the level of ventilation that chams do, and are not nearly so nervous, although they may nose bang if the cage is too small.

Thanks for the info. Do most people end up building their own? Are there "floor plans" out there for these enclosures?

You can buy them, cagesbydesign.com is probably the cheapest place...but it is cheaper to build them yourself. cagesbydesign.com used to sell their plans, I don't know if they still do. Basically you just need a 5x4x2.5 foot box, or larger if you want to keep multiple dragons. I built my trio a 11 x 7 x 5 foot room at one point, but I had to take it down since I needed the room again.

I have my Sabu, in a 260 gal. Reptairum.
I have no trouble with heat and for humidity I use a cold mist humidifyer. I live in Calif so the heat` is always warm here. He loves it!a`nd does not feel confined lke he did in the wood viv.
