birdseed as a sulcata substrate?

lilmountaingrrl Apr 15, 2004 01:21 PM

I just acquired a baby sulcata tortoise, and am trying to find out as much info about them and the care they involve as i can. My husband and I currently have quite a few different types of reptiles in additional to Tortle, the tortoise. Of those reptiles we have some Mali Uromastyx that just love their birdseed substrate.... I was wondering if using birdseed for sulcata tortoises poses any health risks, such as impaction. Right now i've got a timothy hay mixture in Tortle's enclosure for bedding....

Thanks!

Liz

The hay works well as a substrate. I wouldn't use the bird seed. The possibility of impaction is there, plus the tortoise would probably eat it, and I'm not sure about the nutritional effects. Stick with the hay.
