will this stress my gecko out?

alieliza Apr 15, 2004 03:31 PM

My fat tail has been acting weird lately... not eating (he is currently being fed by a needless syringe) and hiding under the paper towels all day. If i change his substrate to the cage carpet, will this stress him out? Will he be stressed because he cant get under? He has changed his ways since we changed to paper towels, so im thinking that maybe we would try something else out.
any advice would be great.
thanks

I'm thinking about changing to paper towels....because I've noticed my little got her tooth caught on the carpet more then once.

Is there anything else he/she can hide under? They need lots of hiding spot, and don't make the entrances too big, they enjoy squishing into small spots.

And honestly switch from whatever you're using, i've got paper towel and floor tiles.

Cleaner and healthier :D

Hi

Leave him on papertowels and if you don't already, make sure there is a hide in the warm end and one in the cool end, also keep a humid hide in there if you don't already.

we have all these things.... hide on cool side and warm side, humid hide, etc. It is ever since we put him on paper towels that he is acting strangely. When i say he is under the paper towels all the time, I mean ALL THE TIME. My boyfriend, who is really a night owl, notices that he rarely comes out even at night (the lizard is kept in the bedroom) and this is definitely a change. he lays under the paper towels, right outside of the hide on the warm side, right on the glass.

Hi

One of my geckos would always like to go under the papertowels on his substrate, but on the cool end, thus he got the name "Hideaway". He did this, like forever and has just recently stopped doing it within the past year or two.

Another thing that I would think is that, since I feed out crickets, and you know that they will go under the papertowels with your gecko, that, that would also make it easier for them to catch the crickets on that slipper glass. That was my thoughts, when he would spend so much time under there, plus I would get him out of there every so offten.

Yeah, I dont know. I have had him for almost a year, and this is the strangest he has ever acted. It has been a few months that he has been acting weridly. He wont eat anything (mealworms and cricket wise) but is now being fed via needleless syringe. We have been to the vet, no obstructions, apparantly no parasites, etc. He just lays under the paper towels all day and night. He wouldnt burrow under the jungle earth, that we had him on before the paper towels.
He is weird. I dont know what is going on.

Hi

I would say, like a baby gecko you would get and bring home, just give him time to get used to the new substrate for a week or two.

Also, you said that the vet. did a fecal test and it supposidly came up negative. Depending on how long it has been since that test, you may want to consider getting another test done. Maybe there wasn't enough for the vet. to really take notice of or something.

He has been on the substrate for about three months. It was around the time that we changed to the paper towels that he stopped eating, but this was also the time of a move from one house to another, and also it was a bit colder there (this was in december or january.) The vet did not do a fecal, as a matter of fact, but he did take a look at a large sample, and said it looked nice and healthy. An x-ray was also done. He was to the vet about three weeks ago. This was when I got the syringe and all necesary ingredients for feeding. I dont know what is wrong with my gecko.

Hi

Did he take a look at the poop under the microscope or did he just eye ball it?.

He really needs to do a fecal on your gecko.

eyeball

Hi

I can't believe he just eyeballed it and said it looked just fine by doing that alone. In my opinion that is not a sign of a good vet..

Your gecko could be loaded with parasites and he may just not have gotten to the point to where he has completely stopped pooping yet.

If you can, find another vet. that knows more about reptiles and will do a fecal test on him.
