Question about substrate

skmcwilliams Apr 15, 2004 03:34 PM

I have been using vermiculite for both the nesting box and in the incubator for the eggs. I have been having a terrible time finding it here now as my home depot, Lowes, and Target have all stopped carrying it. I picked up a bag of Spaghnam moss and I also picked up Spaghnam moss with peat moss in it. Which one is better? Is one better in the nesting box and the other better for incubation? please let me know. thanks

For the nesting box I use spaghnum moss and beadabeast. The bedabeast is essentially dirt, so the eggs a momma get all nice and dirty, then the moss is used for moisture, it holds it well. I use perlite in my incubator, because thats what people do lol. I have never used vermiculite, so I would really help with the comparison. But ya, whatever you have should work. You can incubate the eggs in moss, but you would have to monitor humidity levels and stuff.

You can get vermiculite at most garden centers. I sometimes use spag. moss in the nest box but I won't use it for incubating. I lost some eggs incubating with moss. I am switching to perlite for incubating with the next clutch my leos drop. I still moss in some of the hides/nest boxes but will probably switch to something else in the near future. I am not a moss fan.
