Pyxie frog...possible trouble

ok...so i bought this tiny little pyxie frog about a week ago and i'm not exactly sure whats going on....he hasn't made an appearance since the day i got him...just sitting under the dirt...i moved some dirt away to make sure he was alive and he looks strange...the skin looks kinda "tight" on him as if he's brumating...i don't see how this is possible since it is warm and damp in the tank or is it possible???...any advice would be helpfull

Hi there:

That's normal African bullfrog behavior. Even if you keep the soil moist, they will burrow. In the wild, they live in dry arid Savannahs throughout Africa, and only emerge during the seasonal rains. I keep mine in a dry arid enclosure for this reason. About the tight skin, during the time they are burrowed (they can stay burrowed up to 10 months) the frog will build up a "cocoon." This cocoon is used to hold in moisture while the animal is hibernating. It is made of fluid extracts from its skin, bits of shed skins and urine. Amphibians that live in arid environments also obsorb moisture from the ground using a special gland known as a "seat." Good luck- they make great captives!
