how aggressive are veileds really?

chamsrcool Apr 15, 2004 03:49 PM

i want to get a veiled cham.
the only thing im worried about is i wont be able to get him out of the cage to move outside or show people.

if i got a baby and handled it often would it get used to being handled?

whats the most common reaction veiled have we you try to take them out of the cage?(i know each is different but whats average?)

also would a 2X2X3foot cage be good enough for a male?

well my male veiled was such a cute baby, up untill he was around 8 months old. When I opened the door to feed or clean he would run over to me and climb all over me looking for food, then at 8 months...he became a beast! running and attacking me when I opened the cage, he bites me every time I try to get him out to weigh him. Just plain nasty.

a 2x2x3 cage is ok, could you make it 4 foot high? that would be better. if not I'd at least put LOTS of climbing areas in it for him.

my baby veiled is pretty wary of me

he shifts his body and leans to avoid being looked at

and moves away from my hands when i open his cage to clean or feed him

i hope he doesnt turn into a beast!

I handled Luna almost every day from the time I got her and she was very accomodating. It would be for short periods of time and often to put her in her sunning cage or put her on her jungle gym. She is now nearly a year and some days she hisses and snaps - something she had never done before. Sometimes she will do that "lean away" action and 5 minutes later she will come readily to my hand. If she is not interested I do not push it. From all that I have read here 8-10 months old seems to be when the change happens and/or when they reach (true) sexual maturity. it does seem that the females are a bit more low key than the males.

My 17 month old male Veiled tries to kill me every time I go near his cage. I have accepted him the way he is...he does put on a pretty spectacular show! Just make sure you have a tough pair of work gloves on hand.

My year and a half old male is a real big guy. He is very wary of me and gapes his mouth at me when i try to pick him up. Mostly he is all show and not much action. There was one occasion though that he but me and I don't plan on letting it happen again (painful): ). I would still get one. They are hardy and extremely beautiful. Just try not to make handling a regular thing. 2/2/3 is alright but 2/2/4 is better in my opinion.
Good luck

It really varies and doesn't necessarily matter how much handling they get as youngsters. If you offer treats by hand and get him used to stepping on a stick as well as your hand (nudging or coaxing with the other hand so he decides to move on his own) you will have some options for moving him if he decides to be pissy. Some are mellower than others. My first male veiled was fine...he didn't really LIKE being picked up but he never tried to bite. The meanest cham I've ever met was a wild Furcifer bifidus male in a bush along a Madagascar road. He jumped down to the ground hopping and hissing and almost chased us away! Most of them will puff up, arch their tail and maybe bluff-strike at least when they don't want you.

We have had one since he was a hatchling. He was moody, but in all, very personably. Was normally not caged except for traveling. Was setup with his own window, biovine, a basking light and a shelf.

When he wanted his attention, he would climb down and come looking for someone to hold him and get his favorite snack...a slice of orange.

No problem with our cats or other lizards. Some friends of our also have had veileds that bordered on being evil, but I'm sure it's just the time spent with them.

Do the research and find a vet before you need one.....just in case.

A narrow tall cage is always preferred so they can climb around

I breed & raise lots of veileds. In my experience, they all seem to have their own individual personality. Although they are treated the same, some of mine are biters, but most of them are really sweethearts. To me, it's all in the way I go about getting them out of their cage.
