bpmaster123 Apr 15, 2004 04:58 PM

If you are a teenager with a few snakes please post some details about the size of your collection, i am trying to convince someone that other teenagers have more than one snake. Right now i have one snake and that is my limit but i would like to get more.
Please help, thanks!

I am not a teen anymore, but I got a cornsnake right after moving out of my family home... Then the collection went up to include many more (mostly local neonates that I fattened up over a winter and then released) When i lived in the dorms, I had 2 ball pythons and my corn... (one ball died- it was given to me, and became ill- turned out to be wc, and died of internal parasites before I could save it ) You can see the animals I have today though... If you plan on encouraging friends to get herps, make sure you encourage them to get animals that won't get big and crazy!!

Right now all I have are 2 bullsnakes and a San Diego Gopher snake. I have downsized over the past 2 years or so, but I was keeping everything from waters, to corals, to green tree and white lipped pythons. I am getting to sonoran gopher snakes this weekend as well. Andy

im 16 years old and i have 9 snakes. i have only been bitten once by my current snakes. but that because i was messing with a snake while it was constricting a mouse. it was a dumb move by me. if you can keep one, you are capapble of keeping many. snakes are very easy to care for, so haveing more then one should be easy. i see no problem with commited teenagers keeping many snakes. i also keep a turtle, a gecko, and several tarantulas. are you trying to convice your parents?
i have:
5 Ball Pythons
2 boa constrictors
1 corn snake
1 colombian rainbow boa
this doesnt really help you...but the only hold back a teenager really has is being able to pay for snake food. luckily you only have to buy rodents once every couple months (if you order f/t).

What is wrong with getting chewed on by snakes? You act like it is something to be proud of. My friends and I routinely get snake bites both in the field and with our collections. It doesn't hurt, and I don't even bother avoiding it anymore. Only time it even matters is working with venomous.

Thanks to everyone, yes i am trying to convince my parents who don't like snakes. They said if they could show them that their are other teens that keep snakes in their homes they would consider letting me get more than the one snake i already have. Thanks very much and keep em coming!!!

Yeah my parents...about this time last year...use to tell me that I could only have 2 snakes and have to sell one to get another...but when I wanted to start breeding...well they let me get pretty much whatever I wanted...especially because I wanted to start a business with it, which hopefully becomes somewhat of a true business in the near future

Lets see:
-2 J.carpet pythons
-2 corn snakes
-albino cal. kinsnake
-Pine snake
-gray-banded kingsnake
-blue-striped garter snake

That's it for now, I'm just about to turn 15 and I have had no problems taking care of them and keeping them in good health.

As a teenager (16 years old), I kept and bred many types of snakes. I had 30-40 snakes.

mariasman Apr 18, 2004 06:50 PM

Some of the snakes that I kept at the time included a gray banded kingsnakes, california kings, corn snakes, boa constrictors, rosy boas, ball pythons, honduran milk snakes, and miscellaneous snakes (trans pecos rats, baird's rats, western diamondbacks, rock rattlers, racers, water snakes, rat snakes, etc.).

BTW, I advise AGAINST any private individual from keeping most venomous snakes (some are not dangerous). I kept them out of intense curiosity, but I was HYPER cautious with them. Nevertheless, it should not be done - especially not by teenagers. Also, if you wish to keep multiple snakes, then get a rack system! With only 4 square feet of floor space, a rack system can house a dozen fairly large snakes (adult rat snakes and ball pythons) easily.... the only way to go!

Not to rain on anyone's parade, just some things to think of.

What will you do with them when you leave home... ie go to college? Dorms don't allow pets, and neither do many apartment buildings. These animals can live quite long, and if you take on the responsibility of them, you should be prepared to be able to care for them their whole lives.

Also, make sure you'll be able to afford the care, including food, accomodations, AND vet bills.

My 2 cents...
