How long do YOUR argentine BW hibernate?

paul kemes Apr 15, 2004 06:21 PM

Bert told me they hibernate up to 5-6 months, and also they will hibernate regardless of whether you induce it.

So, I've been thinking of getting an argintine black and white, but I don't want to devote that much space to animals I will only see for six months a year.

To those who keep these guys indoors year round, what has been your experience? When do they start? When do they wake up?
Thanks for any input,
Paul

My most established pair didn't really hibernate at all this past winter. I would describe what they did as a light brumation. They were slow and fed lightly but they were awake most of the winter. Surprisingly, they also bred and produced 39 eggs last month.
