Monitor species - current count?

PK14 Apr 15, 2004 07:49 PM

Hi - the Monitor page lists 53 species of monitor, but that says it's a 1998 page. Monitor classification seems to have been rather dynamic lately. Is 53 still the correct number?

Also - which species are available in the US? Or is it easier to ask which species aren't available?

I believe it's up into the 60's. Check out Varanus.nl's species accounts, Vincent's got everything up to date there..

As for here in the US, I'll give it a shot. Other people feel free to fill in any I left out. Here goes:

Varanus salvator-many different subspecies
Varanus exanthematicus
Varanus niloticus
Varanus ornatus
Varanus dumerilli
Varanus salvadorii
Varanus albigularis-white throats and blackthroats
Varanus timorenis
Varanus auffenbergi
Varanus similis
Varanus prasinus
Varanus beccari
Varanus macraei
Varanus boehmei
Varanus doreanus
Varanus melinus
Varanus caruelvirensis
Varanus indicus
Varanus jobiensis
Varanus griseus
Varanus acanthurus
Varanus tristis t & orientalis
Varanus glauerti
Varanus pilbarensis
Varanus mertensi
Varanus varius
Varanus kingorum
Varanus gilleni
Varanus caudolineatus
Varanus storri
Varanus gouldi
Varanus panoptes
Varanus flavirufus

and then there are the ones that there may be a few floating around the country, but are not by any means "regularly available", like
V. bengalensis and V. yuowoni

Wow, now that I look over this list, it's pretty amazing how many species are here in the US. I guess it would have been easier for me to list the ones that aren't here, but oh well,

Well boys and girls, did I forget any?

That isn't legal is it? I'm not from the US so I don't know about your restrictions on huge dangerous endagered lizard ownership.
Thanks

its getting easier to do legally, i believe there are some loopholes now that allow private ownership of komodos in the us. I however don't know what the restrictions are. I have read Indo's requirements of captive komodos for zoos, they are tedious to say the least.
