BEDDING OF CHOICE!!! PLEASE POST A RESPONCE!

jjtanderson Apr 15, 2004 07:52 PM

What is everyones bedding of choice? I use Aspen for all of my Colubrids. I have a ball python (6 months) from mark and kim bell. And dont want to hurt my new pet and investment. What are the thoughts on asen for ball pythons?

Aspen works well, but so does good ole newspaper. We use Sani-Chips made by Teklad on Adult Ball Pythons and paper towels on hatchlings up to 6 months. On the Retics and Boas we breed we use newspaper mainly because it's easy to clean and they can make a big mess!

I have a baby ball too, and she is on aspen bedding also.

I love aspen, but it's too dry for me, and if you mist it too much it molds. If the room you keep them in is humid enough, you should be fine. I think cypress is the best substrate for Balls, cuz it holds the humidity they enjoy/need. Newspaper works great to, but it's also dry.

Look at pictures of Balls kept on cypress, and then of ones kept on dry substrates. The ones on cypress seem to have a healthier skin/scale tone to them. People often say they are from dry areas, but they live in burrows, and I gaurantee you, it's very humid in those burrows.

We all have our favorites, so chose the one most appealing to you.

Cypress holds humidity better from what I hear.

I personally use and love Lizard Liner carpet - looks nice, easy to clean.

I do use aspen chips (sani-chips) for 2 of my sand boas.

Newspaper is not a viable option. All commercial paper is chemically treated and bleached. Reptile urea only releases the chemicals from this paper. Aspen is used for all my animals. Some babies are kept on paper towels (unbleached towels purchased from health stores; brown in color)
