Crazy...

I've got an Arg B/W (9/24 STV/STL) and today I went to go feed him and had a really screwed up experience.

I keep my rats on the ground (I breed them) I also have my breeders and "pets" mixed together. I placed the tegu on the ground (About 4 feet away) and went to go get a rat.

Now, I have this new, baby (Not even completely weaned) male rat that I've been holding daily. He's a cute little thing and very friendly.

Well, you can guess what happened. I opened the cage and before I could even reach in to grab a pup, the Tegu goes FLYING in. Faster than I could even blink. And you guessed it, he got the one I was raising as a pet. He grabed it by the neck and started to go nuts. I ripped him out and held him, hoping to get him to let go. In the process, his claws dug in and tore me apart, heh.

Well, I got lucky. Minutes before, I had gotten a full glass of ice water to drink. So I turned around, grabbed the glass, and threw it over the Tegu. Not nice, but I'm attached to this rat.

The rat only had minimal damage, and the Tegu just ended up uncomfortable (And got fed shortly after).

Great stuff...

He's still an amazing animal, by far my favorite lizard to date.

I can kinda relate here...

My husband usually goes down to get the feeder mice (this was when meego was still eating them, he is eating rats now) and I told him, only get the solid colored ones!! For some reason, to me the ones that have the spots look way too muh like pet mice...anyway, he brings home a couple of solid color ones, no big deal right? and there at the bottom of the mouse box were a pair of spotted mice, needless to say, they have now been around for going on 6 months!!! As soon as they had names, that was it

I'm glad your little pup ended up being ok! hee hee

wow, what i find amazing is the fact that you got your pet rat back in one piece! i know that if it was stubbs, the little bugger would be crushed and mashed in one bite. my tegu doesn't mess around when it comes to feeding.
