sexual maturity

Frogger1985 Apr 15, 2004 10:12 PM

I have a young ACF that i had suspected male, and i found that true when i added another young frog to his tank. He grabbed her as soon as he saw her. He is very small and i have had him for 7 months. My other frogs were double this size at his age. He is only 2 1/2-3 inches.

How old and big are the males when they are sexually mature?

Thanks,
~Crissy

the males are generally smaller the the females and can range from 2.3-5 inches in my experience and usually reach sexual maturity at 10-12 months.

When you are measuring the frogs, how are you doing so?
(From nose to feet, or nose to anus)

Do you know about how old the males are when they are about 1 inch, nose to anus?
I have 3 adult females, two of which will turn three years old this summer, so i am familiar with the female frogs. I am new with the males and dont know everything about them. I know that they will be smaller and they sing, although i have yet to hear this little one sing. Anything thing you can tell me about the males that is different then the females would be helpful.

Thanks

the males aren't only smaller but also less plump... the girls look almost pear shaped while the males look a little slimmer ( though you gotta watch out and make sure he's not getting thinner because of the piggy girls taking all the food ). Mature males get "black hands" and when you refer to measuring a frog is is usually snout to vent (so you don't include the legs) I have got some froglets right now which are about 3 months old (from being eggs, as in the eggs were laid in jan) and some of them are a little over an inch while others are really tiny still so its not always easy to tell age of these guys by their size. Males can be anywhere from 2.4 inches in my experience though I wouldn't be surprised if yours wasn't done growing yet. Also... they go through piriods of singing and non-singing. My male usually starts to sing and mate after I change the tank water so he's exposed to cool clean water (which to them signifies spring).
hope this helpls a little
